The ‘proteinification’ of food is everywhere at the moment, even Khloe Kardashian has got in on the craze with her ‘high-protein’ popcorn. But is this obsession with protein making us lose sight of the essential elements that make up a healthy balanced diet? It’s true that, particularly in midlife, we need to prioritise protein in our meals to support muscle mass, weight management and blood sugar control, but this is alongside eating sufficient fibre and a variety of plant foods. And if there’s one quiet hero that does more for your hormones, gut health and energy than it gets credit for, it’s fibre.
